History & Heritage

Achinathang’s history is rooted in ancient Dardic and Mon nomadic settlements, with centuries-old petroglyphs at Brakbu Jong-Jong highlighting its prehistoric past. The modern village traces its origin to 1770 C.E. when the King of Ladakh, Tsewang Namgyal, gifted the land to Tsewang Sonam Spalbar of the Ayu Kalon family as a reward for defending the kingdom against Shigar. Following successful canal irrigation projects, the land was officially transferred to the local population in 1812 C.E. Over the centuries, the village evolved into a unique cultural confluence of Buddhist, Muslim, and Dardic traditions, further shaped by historical figures like Meme Samphel, a prominent monk who expanded Drigung Buddhism throughout the wider Aryan Valley.

Local Speciality

Achinathang is renowned for its abundant apricot orchards, producing some of Ladakh's finest apricots that are enjoyed fresh, dried, and as locally made jams and juices.
