Shara is a small traditional village in the Leh region of Ladakh. It lies in a high-altitude, cold-desert environment where life has historically depended on careful use of water from melting snow and glaciers. Shara is situated downstream from Phuktse and upstream from Sharnos, forming part of a traditional irrigation system shared by these villages. For generations, the people of Shara have depended on traditional earthen irrigation channels to bring water from mountain snow and glaciers to agricultural fields. Because Ladakh has a short growing season and very limited water resources, these irrigation practices have been an important part of village life and agriculture.
